PROJECT: Lianhua West Road
Chengdu China 2020-2023
The project was designed remotely from Portugal during the COVID-19 pandemic, with a brief asking for a collection of temporary buildings that could host a range of functions — a clothing store, a café, a bar, restaurants, and an art gallery.
How to create a distinctive and consistent architectural language to serve this diverse program, at the same time maintain affordable, easy to construct as well as flexible and adaptable to the unpredictable economic challenges during this time?
The site, located in the historic centre of Chengdu, is surrounded by mature trees, which is a very rare value in such a dense urban area.
The concept was driven by a desire to integrate the new buildings into the existing urban fabric while respecting the presence of the trees. The approach was to create modular architecture (5m x 5m in plan), with each module featuring sloping roofs. A key design element is the corner of the roof, which is lifted to create a triangular skylight, providing a source of indirect natural light into the buildings. This simple but striking feature allows the buildings to stand out visually while maintaining a consistent architectural identity across the various functions.
By strategically repeating, rotating and positioning these modules, the design forms a complex that spatially blends into the city by creating inviting small public spaces along the pedestrian pathways, an elevated terrace providing unique and intimate experience with the tree canopies, as well as forming more private and quiet shaded backyards. Protecting the trees and respecting their placement, the design incorporates the existing greenery into the complex's overall flow and aesthetic, fostering a connection between nature and urban life.
The triangular skylights become the signature elements that unify the different functions within the complex. Regardless of the building’s use, this consistent architectural feature imbues each space with a soft, natural light, creating a welcoming and calm atmosphere. From the exterior to the interior, the skylights provide visual continuity, enhancing the overall experience while keeping the design both functional and visually distinctive.
This project represents a harmonious blend of modern, pragmatic design with a deep respect for the site’s natural environment. The design approach emphasises the thoughtful integration of the building’s functional, aesthetic, and environmental needs, as well as its ability to adapt to both the context of Chengdu and the broader challenges posed by the changes of the time.
